Your car gets an MOT annually, so why wouldnt your bed?
Remember, you’re going to spend over 20,000 hours in your bed during its lifespan* so it’s worth taking a little time and effort in the beginning to make sure you make the right choice.
Theres a series of questions you can ask yourself to help make up your mind about your own bed.....
Is your bed more than ten years old?
The lifespan of a bed depends a little on the quality you buy in the first place, Some beds will feel shallow and unsupportive after a shorter period of time, The top end of the market will last in excess of 15 years with the correct care. We stock over 150 beds with warranties lasting up to 10 years.
Can you feel the springs or ridges beneath the surface of the mattress?
Its never a good thing if you can feel any part of the bed except for the cover, It can contribute to back problems quickly and given the amount of time you spend in bed its important that it supports you properly.
Is the base uneven or sagging?
Dont forget that your mattress sits on this base, Its important that the base is in good condition as it could do more than just ruin a nights sleep, It could ruin a good mattress too. Its always a good idea to use a spirit level and check how flat the base is if you only intend on changing the mattress.
Would you be embarrassed if your neighbours saw your bed without its covers?
A bed needs to breathe just like we do, Partly the reason for turning and flipping a mattress, Some mattresses have a sleeping side and only require turning, These usually have a more breathable side fabric.
We also stock Protectabed mattress protectors to help keep you rmattress at its best.
Did you find another bed that you maybe slept in recently to be more comfortable and maybe you managed to sleep better?
If this is the case then this could indicate that your bed no longer is fulfilling the original requirements which it did when you first bought it. This is no problem just that you need to ensure you change your bed and mattress so that it meets your new requirements for a good nights sleep.
Do you wake up feeling like you haven’t slept and with backache or other aches and pains?
This could be because of your mattress. Ideally you should aim to check your mattress every six months as they can sag in the middle in a short space of time and you can experience roll together if there are two of you sleeping in a double bed.
This is what many couples experience waking up in the middle of the night to find themselves right up close against their partner in a dip in the middle of the bed. Now we know you love them and you want to be close to them but it is time to get a new, supportive bed and mattress. This could be the same if you find lumps or it looks worn out and used.
One fact here that you will all shiver at the thought of :
The average human sheds approximately 500 grams of dust and half a pint of sweat each night, meaning any bed over ten years old is usually long past its use-by date according to studies.
If you sleep 8 hours a night then its a simple fact that you spend a 1/3rd of your life in bed, Thats 33.3% of your whole life.... in a bed that is no good for you, If it was your job or a car then you would get rid of it and move on to something that suits you, If you feel your bed is past its best, Then it would be a good idea to change sooner rather than later.
Spending £500 on a new bed works out at just 17 pence per night over eight years, thats less than the price of a Freddo bar!
*based on sleeping 7 hours per night, 365 days a year for 7 years. 20,440 hours.
