Why Bed Size Matters

Having enough space in bed is essential to our quality of sleep. Given that we spend about a third of our lives asleep, choosing the right size bed can really benefit our health and wellbeing.

For couples, a larger bed gives you both more space to move about meaning you are less likely to disturb each other whilst sleeping. Having enough space also makes it easier to regulate your body temperature, so you are less likely to overheat which can disrupt your sleep.

What Size Bed for You?

For the average height adult, a single, small double or double bed all offer plenty of space for one.

For couples, the National Bed Federation recommends that you should be able to lie side by side with your arms behind your head and elbows out without touching each other.

Ideally, your bed should also be 10-15cm longer than you or the tallest partner to avoid getting cold toes!

What Size Bed for Your Bedroom?

Deciding which size bed to buy will of course depend on what space you have available in your bedroom. How much room space you want to devote to your bed is a matter of personal choice, however, you ideally want at least two feet of walking space between your bed and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. If you have underbed storage you also need to factor in ease of access to any drawers.

Measuring Tip – Don’t forget the bed frame and headboard!

Whilst each bed is made to fit a standard sized mattress, the actual size of a bed frame or base can vary depending on the style and make of the bed. For example, a divan base without a headboard will often be made to the exact measurements of the mattress, whereas a wooden or upholstered bed frame that fits around a mattress will be wider and longer than the mattress itself.

Before buying, always check that your chosen bed frame dimensions plus any headboard will fit comfortably into the available space.
