You wouldnt think of not insuring or servicing your car? the same goes for your mattress, it will really benefit from being looked after too. Here's why a mattress protector is a must!
1. A mattress protector keeps all sorts of creepy crawlies away.
What do dust mites love to eat? The bits of you that fell off when you sleep, its not just snakes that shed their skin, we do too! – and theres plenty of dead skin in your mattress if you don't use a good quality mattress protector to create a barrier between you and the mattress.
On that note, make sure the one you buy is easily machine washable and tumble dryer friendly (or, buy two for a rapid turn around).
And what can dust mites cause? Allergic reactions, sneezing, runny nose, wheezy chest and shortness of breath? Sound familiar?
Its not all about the mattress, its about your health too.
2. Longer mattress life = Less £££ spent.
We all know a new mattress is usually an overlooked and mostly unplanned mattress purchase, it sort of creeps up on you before you suddenly realise your mattress is knackered, but if you have a mattress protector on it, you will keep it feeling as good as new for much longer than if you don't.
That slightly yukky smell your old mattress gave off? That's the smell of an unprotected mattress. Although you can clean a mattress pretty effectively, there is a limit, and why should you go through all that hassle?
With a protector, all you have to do is pop it off and throw it in the wash. Cleaning a mattress is a lot more complex than that.
3. A protector keeps your mattress clean
Even without a tendency for spills, whether tea or wee, our bodies do quite a lot of nasty stuff at night. Look away if you're eating.
At night, we all sweat– how much sweat we lose into the mattress depends on all sorts of things, from how hot the room is (summer nights where you cant sleep beacuse its so warm?), how old we are (night sweats?), and how breathable your mattresses is, but we'll cover that in another blog post.
Along with that sweat is all the oils we perspire throughout the night, greasy skin?! And the makeup we were too tired to remove before bed, the dead skin we shed (household dust is mostly made up of dead skin cells, nice eh!).
All of that has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is usually straight through your sheets and down into your mattress – whether an old one you bought cheap all those years ago or your newly purchased, couple of months mortgage mattress. Its something to think about...
4. A protector can make you feel more comfortable.
A mattress protector isn't a topper. However, they can improve comfort levels to a degree, especially if you buy one with a thicker, quilted top. This will add some comfort, support, breathability and waterproofing.
5. Allergies!
If you suffer with Asthma, Hayfever or any other similar allergy, surveys and reports have shown that a mattress protector can often help with reducing your symptoms.
